Directorate of Criminal Investigations detectives on Tuesday raided a warehouse in Kariobangi South and seized expired rice being repacked to dupe unsuspecting buyers.
The rice was being repacked in bags labeled with expiry dates of between 2019 and 2021, in a store named Kimende stores.
The consignment branded ‘Amar’ and ‘Day to Day’ was being packaged into new bags under the name ‘Red Rose’ and ‘Peacock Parboil Five Star’.
The multi- agency team was working on a tip off on the expired rice. The DCI officers who led the operation were from the Parklands office.
Elsewhere, Police in Garissa impounded 10 tonnes of illegal brown sugar that was being sneaked into the country from the neighboring Somalia.
The consignment was intercepted along the Modogashe-Modika road, 50 kilometres from Garissa town.
Garissa County police commander Alfred Ongengo stated that the vehicle was carrying 400 bags of 25kgs brown sugar believed to have been imported from Brazil through Somalia.
The police boss also announced that the operation was in collaboration with the customs department following a tip off.
Ongego also revealed that preliminary investigations showed the sugar was destined to a wholesale shop owned by a prominent individual in the area.
He also launched a manhunt for the driver of the vehicle who managed to escape the dragnet.
The commander warned rogue government officials against working in cohorts with unscrupulous businessmen to aid the entry of illegal goods.
