Uhuru to Splash Ksh500M Per Month in New Allocation

President Uhuru Kenyatta's office is set to spend Ksh500 million every month thanks to a new allocation from the Treasury.

In the new Budget proposal, The Presidency got a 26 per cent increase to a lump sum of Ksh11.2 Billion for the 2019/2020 financial year.

The move was widely seen as an end to austerity measures that the president had introduced roughly five years ago.

The budget increased by Ksh2.3 Billion and is set to take effect beginning this July.

Broken down, half of the increase was taken towards the purchase of goods and services aimed at entertaining, hosting dignitaries and the general running of the day-to-day of the Presidency.

The goods budget alone at Uhuru's office was increased to Ksh6 Billion from Ksh4.9 Billion last year. That means that the Presidency will spend Ksh16.4 million every day.

Employees of The Presidency will also benefit from the rise after the employee-compensation budget rose from Ksh2.3 billion to Ksh2.5 billion.

With the changes, this year's allocation is the highest in three years.

This comes roughly a week after it was announced that Uhuru and his deputy William Ruto were set to get pay rise of 3.9 per cent.

Quoting documents from the Treasury, Business Daily reported that with the increase, the combined annual basic salaries of the two will increase from the current Ksh36.6 million to Ksh38 million.

The paper further detailed that according to the budget, the duo would enjoy a combined allowance package of Ksh15.2 million while the salary would be Ksh22.8 million expected to take effect starting June this year.
