Government Warns Kenyans Over Affordable Housing Scam

The government has warned Kenyans to beware of unscrupulous individuals who have been conning people by claiming to be allocating affordable housing units in the upcoming Park Road project.

It also revealed that the scammers have been stealing from unsuspecting Kenyans by charging them in the false pretense that they will offer affordable housing units.

Housing Secretary in the State Department for Housing and Urban Development Patrick Bucha, a in a statement, noted that the matter has been reported at the Pangani Police Station for appropriate action.

This is to notify all Kenyans that when the houses are ready, the government will inform the public, especially those who have registered in the Boma Yangu portal, on how the units will be allocated appropriately,” the statement reads.

He went on to urge anyone that had fallen for the scam to report the case to the authorities.

The Park Road project is expected to have a total of 1500 housing units that will range between Ksh600,000 and Ksh1.4 million

Bucha also added that the people who will be allocated the units must have registered via Boma Yangu portal which by Tuesday had 220,624 participants.

The Star reported that the portal will soon be linked to KRA, e-citizen and relevant personal information portals which will be used in allocation.

Upon registration, a person is allocated a unique identification number through which they will make their monthly contribution to the housing fund as per the requirements of President Uhuru Kenyatta’s Big 4 agenda.

Out of the 500,000 houses to be built in the affordable housing projects at least 100,000 will be set aside for the people living in the informal sector.
