400 Morans Attack Home Over Stolen Cow

A group of Maasai morans attacked a home in Olalui village, Trans Mara West and burnt two houses as administration leaders watched helplessly.

The angry morans alleged that the owner of the home had stolen a cow that belonged to a widow.

The morans, said to be about 400 in number had been looking for a cow stolen in Nyamecheo village, Kisii county.

The search led them to the home of one Elokutuk Nayenkop, where the missing cow is said to have been found.

The young men, armed with crude weapons did not pay heed as the four chiefs who had accompanied them tried to convince them to let the law take its course.

They proceeded to burn two houses and left with 60 cows from the compound.

Cases of cattle theft and subsequent attacks in the area have been rampant.

Residents have resolved to taking matters into their own hands, citing that when suspects are arrested, they are released on bond and continue to steal from them.

Speaking to journalists, chairman of the Trans Mara Peace Committee- Julius ole Maki confirmed that cattle theft has caused animosity among residents living around the Narok-Kisii border.

Nyamecheo chief Wilfred Ombati said the Kisii had resolved to end cattle rustling by identifying stock thieves.

Leaders from both communities have agreed to work together to see to it that the vise that is now threatening peace in the area, is brought to an end.

Police investigations into the matter continue in the meantime, as two suspects arrested in connection to the stolen cow remain in custody.
