Day ICC Prosecutor Stepped on the Toes of Kibaki and Raila

Kenyans will remember the Ocampo Six as the group of politicians who were blamed for the 2007/8 Post-election Violence.

The famous list announced by Louis Moreno Ocampo, who was the ICC prosecutor, had been shown to former President Mwai Kibaki and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga two weeks before it was made public.

The revelation was made by Odinga in his book, Flame of Freedom

Raila disclosed that Ocampo agreed to show the list to the two leaders and other members of their inner circles before releasing it to the public.

The secret showing was done at State House Nairobi.

Among those present was then Lands Minister and current Senate Minority leader, James Orengo.

Ocampo read out the names of Uhuru Kenyatta (then Finance minister), William Ruto (Education) and Henry Kosgey (Industrialisation).

“When Ocampo mentioned Muthaura, Kibaki exploded and began to protest loudly,” Odinga wrote in his book.

Raila recounted how a “very agitated” Kibaki shouted: “No, no, no! You cannot go on this way!” when the name of his top general Francis Muthaura was read out.

The former president was “extremely agitated” but despite his protests, “had no option but to accept what Ocampo was telling us”.

The former PM according to reports at the time, was also agitated by the inclusion of Kosgey in the list. Kosgey was a Raila man through and through.

At the end of the meeting, the participants agreed to stay mum about it for the remaining two weeks before it was made public.
