50 Former Gang Members Earn Sonko International Recognition

Nairobi Governor, Mike Mbuvi Sonko, was on Wednesday awarded by the Professional Criminologists Association of Kenya and Mission Africa citing that the capital was safer and had earned him international recognition.

The award ceremony, which was attended by UK operatives, took place at PCEA St Andrews Plenary Hall.

Sonko's work in reforming over 50 former gang members and his no-nonsense approach to the fight against graft enabled him clinch the award.

The gang members were able to reform after the governor involved them in various county projects including Ng'arisha Jiji Initiative, Nairobi River Clean-Up, Sonko Rescue Team and others.

In doing this, the youth were able to earn a decent living from these projects.

Speaking during the event, the Nairobi county boss highlighted that he would ensure no public resource is stolen.

"I am ready to lose friends if it means protecting resources belonging to Nairobi residents and Kenyans at large," Sonko maintained.

The governor also noted that the county had fallen victim to theft of public funds, which he stated he would deal with by banning the handling of cash in offices.

"Everyone seeking to make any payment to my county government now pays directly to the bank, or using mobile payment platforms," he concluded.
