Kenyan Lorries Carrying Humans in Biscuit Boxes Baffle Ugandan Authorities

Officers working with the Ugandan Revenue Authority (URA) and the police force were on Friday baffled by two Kenyan lorries that were transporting human bodies wrapped up in biscuit boxes.

Daily Monitor, a Ugandan news outlet by the Nation Media Group, reported that the suspects were nabbed at the Busia-Uganda border in the wee hours of the morning.

The case was reportedly a human-trafficking one and the people, believed to be from different African countries, were being sneaked into Uganda.

Confirming the incident, URA Commissioner Customs Dicksons Collins Kateshumbwa stated that they arrested the drivers of the two trucks and that an investigation was launched into the matter.

“We intercepted them at 4 am this morning at Busia border post using our Non-Intrusive Inspection Technology.

“The two people have been arrested by Customs Enforcement intelligence and are being held in Kampala for interrogation and we shall work with other agencies to understand the motives," intimated Kateshumbwa.

Other sources indicated that the suspects were carefully unwrapped and screened for any Ebola symptoms before they were transported to Kampala, the country's capital city.

“This interception further underscores the importance of deploying more scanners at borders.

“We are deploying 7 more scanners by September and will be adding more in the course of the year," continued Kateshumbwa.

The scanners that are installed at Ugandan border points have so far saved the country to the tune of Ksh28 Billion in taxes from concealed goods.
