Govt Makes Changes to Reduce Long Queues at Nyayo House

Immigration Principal Secretary (Rtd.) Major General Gordon Kihalangwa has cleared the air regarding the extensive lines at Nyayo House for those applying for passports.

Last week netizens complained about the length of the lines faced when applying for an e-passport, a situation that has persisted for years leading to frustrations among Kenyans.

Gen Kihalngwa, while speaking at Nyayo house, stated that the government will give priority to those with valid machine-readable passport applying for an e-passport in order to reduce the long queues.

Others who will enjoy the favoured treatment are those seeking medical attention abroad, students going to school abroad, pilgrims going to Mecca and government officials leaving the country.

One will have to produce evidence of the above to get this special treatment.

Kenyans applying for a passport without any urgent reason for travel, have been asked to do so at their own time.

This is to reduce the long lines snaking the Nyayo house complex.

General Kihalangwa maintained that the government had given enough time for Kenyans to renew their passports since 2017.

He urged those without any urgent need for a passport to apply later warning that they would neither be attended nor will their application forms even be looked at.

The government in 2017 started the process to phase out machine-readable passports.

The deadline to renew machine-readable passports is set for August 31, 2019.
