John-Allan Namu Makes History After Bagging Coveted Award

Former KTN anchor John-Allan Namu made history on Tuesday after bagging the Trace International Award for investigative reporting.

Speaking to Kenyans.co.ke on phone Namu revealed that the investigative journalism award came to Africa for the first time after he was announced the winner in Vancouver Canada.

He left the Standard Group-owned media house and co-founded ‘Africa Uncensored’ an online media house that focuses on investigative journalism.

Namu, who was extremely excited about the win, gave credit to the team behind him.

Africa Uncensored won the award for their investigative piece ‘The profiteers’ which focused on the South Sudanese war and people who profit from the same.

On his Twitter handle, Namu mentioned Stevey Mane, Sam Munia, Elijah Kanyi and Mutemi Kumalija as part of the team that assisted in the production.

He further referred to the winning story as the rejected stone that later came to be the pillar of the building after KTN had turned down the offer to air it earlier.

Namu went seeking for answers to the South Sudanese puzzle on The Profiteers piece in multiple locations in Kenya, Uganda and inside South Sudan itself.

The winners of the award received a cash prize of Ksh1 million and the reporter(s) are invited to the award ceremony hosted by TRACE.

The judges also named up to two honourable mentions, who despite winning the overall award, were each awarded Ksh 100,000.
