Karanja Kabage: The Quiet Life of Prominent City Lawyer

Kenyans, on Saturday, woke up to shocking news that lawyer Karanja Kabage had suddenly passed on after a grisly accident in Karen.

Kabage was driving along the Southern Bypass from Ole Sereni direction towards Kikuyu general direction before his car lost control.

Not many people, however, knew the life and career of the lawyer. He was mourned by prominent leaders including President Uhuru Kenyatta, former Prime Minister Raila Odinga and a rack of other top personalities in Kenya.

Here is a short profile of Karanja Kabage.

The lawyer, who doubled up as a businessman, was born in September 1949 in Elburgon area, Molo sub-county.

He is a prominent insurance expert and served as a Director at African Reinsurance Corporation and First Reinsurance Brokers Limited which are located in Nairobi.

He was appointed to the board of Africa Reinsurance Corporation in 2014 after the company's shareholding expanded.

The respected lawyer also served on the boards of numerous other high-flying organisations such as the Kenya Private Sector Alliance, National Social Security Fund (NSSF), Labour Advisory Board and Energy Regulatory Authority Commission.

Kabage pursued Bachelor of Law degree and Masters of Law from the University of Nairobi before proceeding to undertake Masters of Business Administration at the United States international university.

In 2017, he unsuccessfully ran for the Nakuru County senatorial seat.

President Uhuru Kenyatta mourned him as, "a resourceful person who was always willing and ready to offer legal aid to those who sought his help.”

“It is painful to lose a great friend at a time like this. I pray that God will give the family, friends and relatives comfort and fortitude at this trying moment,” added Uhuru.

"It's with shock and sadness that I have received news of the untimely demise of lawyer, politician and businessman Karanja Kabage, my heartfelt condolences go out to his family and friends. May God grant them strength at this trying moment and may his soul rest in eternal peace," expressed Raila.

IG Hillary Mutyambai ordered the DCI to open a probe into circumstances that led to his death.
