Four Chinese Gold Smugglers Arrested in Kenya

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) on Sunday announced the arrest of 4 Chinese nationals in Vihiga County.

Investigators claimed to have apprehended the four suspects after they were nabbed mining for gold during the night without any form of documentation.

"The four were identified as, Ou Haiwen, Zhang Jinyu, Jiang Hualin & Huang Lei are in custody & interrogations are ongoing," DCI tweeted.

Chinese nationals have been landing on the wrong side of the law, with the latest incident coming barely two days since Li Bingpeng (another Chinese citizen) was charged with stealing second-hand shoes.

The status of Chinese businessmen making a killing in Kenya has been the subject of recent debate, with Starehe MP, Jaguar ending up behind bars over his inflammatory statements against foreigners.

This came after several Chinese nationals were discovered illegally carrying out businesses at the lucrative Gikomba market in Nairobi.

Back then, the Interior Cabinet Secretary, Fred Matiang'i stepped in and ordered for their immediate deportation.

”Whoever wants to apply for a work permit should do it from their respective countries, not in Kenya,” he said, adding that all foreigners working as small scale traders in Kenya would be deported.

The DCI also disclosed that they had recovered a homemade Rifle with One Round of Ammo in Teso North, Busia County & arrested one suspect Kennedy Juma Mutunga on Saturday night following a search in one of the suspect's houses.
