A trailer, on Monday, rammed two vehicles at the Mto wa Mawe bridge along Mombasa Road and plunged into Athi River.
After the accident occurred, eyewitnesses and the motorists who got to the scene sprung into action to rescue the occupants from the wreckage.
The crash resulted in a traffic snarl-up along the busy highway.
Here are photos of the accident:
Mto wa Mawe area is considered a dangerous stretch of road with the National Police Service listing it as one of the accident black spots on Kenyan roads.
The section is considered risky for motorists due to the number of accidents that have occurred in its vicinity over the years.
Motorists are advised to take extra care whilst driving in the area.
Following the rains that were experienced earlier in the year, doubts were raised over the safety of the bridge.
The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) came out with a statement assuring that the Mto wa Mawe bridge was safe.
Speaking during the inspection of repairs and the construction of an additional bridge on River Athi, KeNHA director of development David Muchilwa stated, "The bridge’s main structure and structural pillars are still firm. The bridge can hold for up to 50 years or more based on our technical calculations."
