Wiper Leader Kalonzo Musyoka and former presidential aspirant Martha Karua are among 60 lawyers seeking promotions in their respective fields.
According to The Star, the lawyers have lodged an application seeking to join the exclusive club of Senior Counsel in order to enjoy privileges every time they appear in court.
The privileges include occupying front seats in courts, having their cases heard first, donning special robes and preferential treatment in dealing with the Judiciary.
To qualify for the post, however, as Daily Nation reports, a person should have served in the high court for more than 15 years or contributed to the development of the legal profession through scholarly writings.
The applicants are then vetted by a committee comprising of the attorney-general, a court of appeal judge, a high court judge, three senior counsel and four advocates.
After the vetting process is done, the names are forwarded to the president for conferment.
Their names are then published in a gazette notice to usher them into senior counsel club.
Other lawyers who have applied for the post include veteran John Khaminwa, lawyer Judy Thongori, former Mombasa mayor Taib Ali Taib, former Director of Public Prosecutions Philip Murgor, law scholar Ben Sihanya, Nairobi Law Society of Kenya (LSK) chairman Charles Kanjama, chairman of Political Parties Dispute Tribunal Kyalo Mbobu, Njoroge Regeru, Wambua Kilonzo and Imaana Laibuta among others.
Currently, the club contains only 31 members who are led by Chairman Fred Ojiambo.
