DPP Haji Banks On Lawyer Who Beat Him, to Nail CS Rotich

DPP Noordin Haji has entrusted the task of prosecuting suspended CS, Henry Rotich, and other Kimwarer and Arror dams scandal suspects to one Taib Ali Taib

Taib is no stranger to court battles as he has also floored Haji in two past court cases.

Speaking to The Standard, he promised a short but effective court battle that would be different from other corruption cases that have dragged on for months and years.

“I can’t discuss the strategy we will use but we are ready to prosecute these cases”, he told the local newspaper.

On Tuesday, he surprised those who expected him to adopt the predictable confrontational line of prosecutors when he put a very little fight against the bail terms for the suspects.

The Kitui-born lawyer studied in Nairobi School before joining The University of Nairobi, where he graduated with a law degree. He later joined Kenya School of Law before he was admitted to the bar.

“One of my regrets is that after I graduated from The University of Nairobi, I had the chance to join Harvard University for my PhD but I did not because of the excitement to start practising,” Taib told the media in a past interview.

In 1993, he was elected vice-chairman of the Law Society of Kenya (LSK), deputising former Chief Justice Willy Mutunga.

He later became the mayor of the now-defunct Mombasa City Council between 2003 and 2006.

One of the cases which Taib beat DPP Haji involved a Ksh 44 million cache of ivory where he appealed against a 20-year jail term handed to businessman Feisal Mohammed who walked free.

He also represented suspects who were charged with the June 15, 2014 killings in Mpeketoni and Hindi in Lamu County.

Mahadi Swaleh Mahadi alias Jesus and Suleiman Ahmed Diana who were charged with 60 counts of murder walked free after the cases were dismissed by Justice Martin Muya.
