Sonko Extravagantly Welcomes History-Making Basketball Team at JKIA

Nairobi Governor, Mike Mbuvi Sonko, has sent out dancers at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport to welcome the Kenya National Basketball team 'the morans'.

In a video posted on the governor's Facebook page, a convoy of vehicles, as well as a roadshow truck, are seen smoothly navigating inside the airport.

Women dancers are also seen singing and vigorously dancing as they wait for the history-making team to arrive.

"I will continue offering my support to the team in order to development of the sport locally. Hongera the Morans," the governor posted.

The morans made history after they finished second behind the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC)  in the FIBA AfroCan basketball tournament in Bamako, Mali. They lost 81-62 to their Congolese opponents in Saturday’s final.

Previously, Kenya's best performance had been in fourth place in a game that took place at the 1987 All Africa Games in Nairobi.

Kenya Basketball Federation (KBF) Secretary General, Vitalis Gode, confirmed that Opposition leader, Raila Odinga, had given the basketball team some money as an incentive before they left for Mali.

"Keep your heads high Morans for trying your best against the Democratic Republic of Congo to emerge second overall at the Fiba AfroCan2019 basketball tournament in Bamako.

We’re proud of you and wish you all the best in future outings,” Odinga had encouraged them.
