Anyang Nyong’o Schools Uhuru on Cancer

Kisumu Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o, on Saturday, sharply contrasted with President Uhuru Kenyatta's announcement on Friday that there were plans to set up additional chemotherapy and radiology labs countrywide.

Speaking during the burial service of the late Bomet Governor Joyce Laboso at Fort Ternan, Kisumu county, Nyong’o stated that there was a need to invest in research, education and human resource specialisation to address cancer in Kenya.

We seem to be laying a lot of emphasis in building cancer centres….what is important about cancer is getting people who are specialized in the different types of cancer,” he retorted.

We have a long way to go….we can build cancer centres but without specialists, we will not know how to run the equipment.

“With cancer centres only we’ll not get it right- it is important but we need to stop myths so that we deal with real issues," said Nyong'o,” he added.

In 2010, Governor Nyong’ o, who was the then Minister for Medical Services was diagnosed with prostate cancer at MP Shah Hospital where he had gone for a routine medical checkup.

His diagnosis only became public in January 2011 when local dailies carried his story while he was

He then travelled overseas at the University of California San Francisco Zion Medical Centre, where he underwent radiotherapy and is said to be in remission.

The facility is considered one of the best prostate cancer centres in the world.

Nyong'o, however, reiterated that Kisumu County had lost a great person.

He reiterated that the late Laboso played roles of both Bomet governor and deputy chairperson of the Lake Region Development Economic Bloc with passion.
