DCI Launches Investigation Into Wendy Waeni Case

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) on Friday, finally spoke up on gymnast Wendy Waeni's case.

According to its post on Twitter, the detectives have opened an investigation into the matter where the 14-year-old accused her former manager, Joe Mwangi, of exploiting her.

"DCI Detectives from the Child Protection Unit have today commenced investigations into this matter & should ANY criminal culpability be found, appropriate legal action will be taken," they posted.

Ms Waeni's sad situation was brought to light, on Wednesday night, in an interview with renowned Citizen TV journalist, Jeff Koinange on his JKLive show.

In the show, Ms Waeni, painfully narrated how her former manager exploited her, even misusing her social media platforms to insult people, earning her backlash.

Principal Prosecution Counsel in the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution (ODPP), Duncan Ondimu, who was watching the show, was shocked by the revelations.

"This is so criminal of Mwangi. So sad what he has done to the little girl. He ought to pay heavily for what he has done," he commented.

"I hope she and her mum file an official police complaint. I'm sure the DCI would gladly investigate. He should be aware of Section 268, 313 of the Penal Code," Ondimu added.

On Thursday, Wendy's mother, Magdaline Syombua, further disclosed that the Wednesday interview with Jeff had resulted in Mwangi threatening her.

"Now that the situation has boiled over, he threatened me. He stated that he was no longer willing to pay for Wendy's passport adding that the person who took us to Citizen TV should take care of everything," she told reporters.

Ms Syombua further recounted how the ex-manager had duped her since 2014, when they entered into the agreement, claiming that he was giving Wendy exposure.

"At one point I asked him, are there no proceeds from all these places you've been taking Wendy to perform at?

"He responded that all this time, he was only promoting Wendy and giving her exposure which didn't translate into monetary gain," she explained.

Earlier on, Mwangi took to his social media to dismiss all the accusations levelled against him, stating that he had never left the country with Wendy.

Wendy's case elicited a lot of emotions on social media with many calling for the arrest of Mwangi.
