A Kenyan cadet, on Friday, received the Hodson's Horse Merit Award at the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst in the UK, setting a new record.

The cadet, Stephen Keiya received the award for best overall performance by an International Cadet.

It is the first Merit award for any cadet from Kenya (there have been 118 Kenyan cadets at The Academy since 1960).

Keiya and his colleague Sally Chebii, were among the 33 international cadets out of the 243, who were commissioned at the Sovereign's Parade.

Present during the ceremony were Kenyan High Commissioner to London Manoah Esipisu, Military Adviser Colonel Joseph Mokwena.

Also present was Major General Mater bin Salem bin Rashid al Balushi, the Commander of the Royal Army of Oman.

The Royal Military Academy Sandhurst (RMAS) is where all officers in the British Army are trained to take on the responsibility of leading their soldiers.

Other Nations choose to send their personnel to RMAS for Officer training because it is recognised as a world-leading military training academy.

There have been 5,000 international students trained at the Academy since 1947, from 120 countries.

The international cadets enrich the course at Sandhurst bringing with them cultural and operational experience from around the world.

Students are selected by their own defence organisations and their applications are made to the Ministry of Defence through the Defence Attaché.
