Judge in Sonko Case Weds [PHOTOS]

Environment and Land Court Judge Bernard Eboso, on Friday, wed his partner Irene Onacha in a colourful ceremony.

The ceremony was attended by Chief Justice David Maraga and Chief Registrar of the Judiciary Anne Amadi.

CJ Maraga sent his warm wishes to the couple stating, "Congratulations to Justice Benard Eboso and Irene Onacha on their wedding. I wish you blessings and happiness in your matrimonial union."

In February 2019, Eboso made a ruling where he found that the demolitions of buildings in Kayole that were halted after the intervention of Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko were legal.

Sonko who forced bulldozers out of the site declared, "I don’t want to see the hired bulldozers on site until we resolve this matter. I know the courts approved the demolitions but on grounds of humanity, we cannot torture our fellow citizens especially during this festive season. This matter should be done in a humane way and in accordance with the law."

In his ruling that dealt a major blow to the families who had their property destroyed, Justice Eboso insisted that a 2014 judgment requiring those on the land to vacate was still in force.

The ruling came after 20 families whose houses were demolished in December 2018 in Kayole moved to court seeking compensation from Nairobi businessman Mike Maina through his company Muthithi Investment Limited.

Justice Eboso is also known for a ruling where dismissed an application seeking to temporarily suspend the government-initiated ban on plastic bags.

In the ruling, Judge Eboso noted that environment protection overrides commercial interests, hence, the ban would continue as scheduled.

"Granting the orders sought will severally undermine the protection of the environment while serving commercial interests," he ruled.

The petition was filed by importers, wholesalers and retailers of plastic bags who sought to have the court quash the ban.
