West Pokot Governor, John Lonyangapuo, has finally disclosed that he declined a six-figure salary in the United Kingdom for the love of his people.
While appearing on K24 TV's Weekend With Betty, the governor revealed that after completing his course, he was offered a lecturing job in Cambridge.
He was to make 3,000 pounds monthly which, when adjusted to inflation, translates to Ksh1.9 million.
He disclosed that he declined the generous offer because he wanted to come back and enlighten his people.
"I was given a job in Cambridge to teach Applied Mathematics and I was going to get 3,000 pounds per month, a house and probably a car.
"But then I remembered (my people). I said, 'When I remain here, who will assist those people to tell them what I went for is actually good and it can change our lifestyle.' So I came," he told the show's host, Betty Kyallo.
He attributed his success to the enlightenment he got through education and that he got the knowledge to rear high-quality cattle which could sell for up to Ksh 80,000 each.
During the interview, Lonyangapuo also revealed that he used to work as a herdsboy and was spotted by teachers who asked his father to enroll him in school.
"Government decided to post teachers here. They would walk in our place, they came across my father and found me looking after our cows. Then they said, 'This guy is sharp, why can't he go to school?" he narrated.
Lonyangapuo went to Leeds, Cambridge (6 months) and Oxford (6 months) Universities.
