Two prison constables at Manyani Maximum Prison in Voi, were captured on CCTV cameras hiding cocaine in one of the toilets.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) affirmed the incident, going on to announce that the two officers had been apprehended.
"Two Kenya Prisons Constables captured on CCTV camera hiding cocaine in a toilet were yesterday nabbed by DCI Detectives from Voi," read an excerpt of their tweet.
The two prison constables have since been identified as Boniface Korir and William Chengo.
DCI officers also found the two suspects in possession of several rounds of unauthorized ammunition.
This incident comes in the wake of the reshuffling of 133 senior prisons officers last Sunday, with the tone of the transfer letters being an indicator that all was not well in the force.
“No representations will be entertained from any quarter,” read the directive by the Commissioner-General, Wycliffe Ogalo.
The new Commissioner General particularly pointed out cases of staff reporting to work drunk, absconding duty, breaching the service’s confidentiality and facilitating criminal activities in prisons, acts which he warned would not go unchecked.
On the same day, DCI stopped the release of 120 hardcore criminals under the Presidential Pardon Scheme, going on to launch investigations into suspected bribery of top prisons officials who selected the convicts to be freed.
The timely intervention happened barely a few weeks after the escape of 17 criminals from a moving police vehicle, that was transporting them to Industrial Area Prison last month.
