Cliff Ombeta Recalls Death Threats He Received in Akasha Case

Renowned criminal lawyer, Cliff Ombeta, on Sunday disclosed his encounter during the arrest of his clients, the Akasha brothers.

According to Ombeta, on the night of the arrest, he was neither spared, despite being the Akasha's lawyer.

Reports by The Standard indicated that Ombeta recounted the violence he says was meted out on him by the US and Kenyan police officers during the "violent arrest" of his clients' homes.

Aside from being handcuffed to prevent him from speaking to his client, he was held at gunpoint and threatened.

According to Ombeta, his biggest heartache was how the events unfolded, further revealing that his client was abducted from Kenya.

The reason for this was that Kenyan officials were desperate to get rid of his client partly because they were well aware that evidence held against him could not sustain a conviction in a Kenyan court.

He further blamed one of his clients, Vijayghiri Goswami, who was said to have testified against the Akashas in what the court had described as a decades-old drug trafficking, murder and racketing operation that also involved bribery of the judiciary.

He had revealed that the Akashas had bribed Kenyan officials to delay their extradition to the US.

Ombeta, however, dismissed the claims stating that his clients were abducted by US officials on January 26, 2017, after sensing that the conduct of the prosecution in the handling of evidence could not convince Kenyan courts to listen to the extradition application.

This comes after the Akasha brothers were served with a 25-year jail sentence on the strength of Goswami's testimony in court.
