IEBC Dragged Into Jubilee's Fake Letter Saga

The story of an allegedly doctored letter listing names of Jubilee Party aspirants for the Kibra by-election, took an unexpected turn on Tuesday afternoon, after the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), issued a statement.

Despite the ruling party categorically denouncing having drafted up the letter, IEBC acknowledged having received the letter.

"IEBC received a letter, on Monday 26, August 2019 at 5 pm, forwarding names of aspirants of Jubilee Party for the Kibra by-election," an excerpt of the commission's statement divulged.

The letter, which was widely circulated across numerous social media platforms, contained the names of five candidates who had expressed interest in contesting for the legislative seat.

Kenyan iconic footballer, McDonald Mariga Wanyama, was part of the list alongside Morris Peter Kinyanjui, Mukinyingi Walter Trenk, Said Ibrahim and Doreen Khayanga Wasike.

However, upon learning of the unidentified origin of the letter, IEBC duly sent a copy of the forged letter to Jubilee headquarters.

"It has come to the attention of the commission that Jubilee Party has denied authoring the said letter and termed it as fake," the statement from the elections body disclosed.

The ruling party had earlier, on Monday, declared that it would be fielding a candidate to battle it out for the National Assembly seat, left vacant following the death of former MP Ken Okoth.

This negated Nairobi Senator Johnson Sakaja's bid to have his Jubilee party steer clear from the Kibra by-election.
