How Raila's Wife Saved Ambassador From Beating at 3am

Kenyan Ambassador to United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), Yvonne Khamati, has Raila Odinga's wife, Ida, to thank after saving her from a beating in the wee hours of the morning.

In a sit-down with a local news outlet, Khamati recalled that her husband was an abusive man but thanks to Ida, she successfully walked out of the marriage.

She also disclosed that Sports Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohammed played a big role in her life during her troubled days.

“He was a violent man and I thank Ida Odinga and (Sports CS) Amina Mohamed who got me out of that relationship.

“The first time he hit me was at our home in  Muthaiga and I called Ida at 3am. She is the one who helped me to get out. The second time was at a hotel in Yatta," recounted Khamati at the time.

In the second instance, the mother of two went on to add that she reached out to Nyandarua Governor Francis Kimemia who sent a group that eventually freed her from her husband's wrath.

"I called Francis Kimemia who dispatched diplomatic police to get me out of the situation. My daughter was only four months old at the time.

"I vowed never to go back and that was the end of the relationship. I realised I was not the victim but he was a victim of his anger and bitterness," she continued.

During the interview, Khamati also shone a light on her special relationship with Amina revealing that the sports CS challenges her the most.

"Amina has always supported me, she kept talking to me and encouraging that I cannot be alone forever and when she met Laiwola she said, ‘When he proposes, say yes!’" Khamati added.

Yakubu Laiwola, 48, is her current husband and is originally from Nigeria. He worked with former United Kingdom Prime Minister Tony Blair and US President Barack Obama on Power Energy Africa.
