Survivor Recounts Moment Wife, 5 Relatives Drowned at Hell's Gate [VIDEO]

A tourist who watched his wife and five relatives get swept away by flash floods at Hell's Gate while on tour, on Monday, broke his silence about the ordeal.

In an interview with Daily Nation, Ivraj Singh Hayer disclosed that he had cast doubt to the site's management about the tour but they assured him that everything would be fine.

"Before I decided to take the detour...I was very inquisitive about the safety but they (guides) assured that it was well," recounted Hayer.

It all started on Sunday at 2pm. Hayer and his 13 relatives paid a fee and were assigned a tour guide who would direct them during the trip.

At 3pm, narrated the tourist, they started experiencing slight showers but upon raising an alarm, they were told that they would be fine since a tragedy had only occurred nine years ago.

"Suddenly, the water started flowing downstream and me and my driver held at each other as my relatives were being swept away.

"He (a guide) made several distress calls to the KWS main office but the response was not forthcoming," continued Hayer.

The driver held on a stone while Hayer and his niece clung on him for an hour when rescuers arrived.

On Sunday, September 1, Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) confirmed that six tourists and their tour guide were swept away by the floods and two bodies had been recovered at the time.

The other bodies were found on Monday morning.
