Police Agency Boss Fired After State House's Directive Was Ignored

Independent Police Oversight Authority (IPOA) CEO Maina Njoroge has been fired barely 15 months after taking up the job, the Nation reports.

The publication indicated that Njoroge was sacked by the agency's board of directors on Friday, August 30.

Njoroge replaced Joel Mabonga who retired in 2018. His appointment was mired with controversy to a point State House had to wade in issuing a directive on the hiring process.

State House through the Head of Public Service, Joseph Kinyua, had instructed the board whose term was about to end to suspend selecting a new CEO until new board members were sworn in.

"This office has information that you are in the process of recruiting a chief executive officer, a process that may not be complete before May."

“It has therefore been decided that the process to fill the vacant position of CEO in your office be suspended until the incoming committee is in place,” he instructed.

The outgoing board went ahead and appointed Njoroge as CEO despite the directive from State House.

The new board of directors was sworn in four months after Njoroge took office and according to the Nation, some members had been pushing for his sacking because they did not hire him.

The second IPOA Board led by Chairperson Ann Makori, officially took office on October 5, 2018, after being sworn into office by the Deputy Chief Registrar of the Judiciary Paul Ndemo during the occasion witnessed by Chief Justice David Maraga.

Other members who also took the oath of office were Doreen Nkatha Muthaura,  Fatuma Mohamud Mohamed, Walter Owen Ogony,  Jonathan Lodumpul Ltipalei, John Muriithi Waiganjo, Praxedes Chepkoech Tororey and  Jimmy Mutuku Mwithi.
