Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko, on Friday, September 7, 2019, skipped the 4th anniversary of his late father, Gideon Kioko Mbuvi Kivanguli, at the Mua Hills residence.
NTV reporters camped at Sonko’s home where he was expected but the family was forced to proceed without him.
His absence raised eyebrows given the love he has for his father which he has expressed in very flamboyant ways. During his burial in 2015, the late Kivanguli’s remains were carried from Lee Funeral Home in a coffin that was encrusted with gold and diamond fakes.
Photos of Friday‘s event that were shared on the governor’s Facebook showed his wife Primerose with other members of the family.
Citizen TV reported that Sonko was holed up in meeting the whole day likely to have been occasioned by his date with EACC and KRA.
The anti-corruption commission questioned him about garbage collection tenders and some Ksh20 million in his account.
KRA had called Sonko to shed light on a Ksh4.5 billion tax bill that the authority wants to slap his administration with.
The said meetings were convened to come up with solutions, should the governor be arrested, noting that Nairobi County doesn’t have a deputy governor to take over if Sonko is required to step aside.
He was therefore expected to name his choice to replace Polycarp Igathe who resigned in January 2018.
“If I am found not guilty I will come back to the office but if I am found guilty then I will carry my own cross because the accusations will have been levelled against Sonko in his capacity as a governor of the people of Nairobi and not the other officers of the county government,” he told journalists.
Sonko had intimated that he was making plans to come up with a person who would act in his absence.
“We currently have a positional crisis but we are making plans to come up with a person who will act in my absence which we will then forward to the Assembly for approval,” he stated.
