EACC Detective Nabbed For Stealing Evidence Money

Corporal Lilian Simiyu, an officer attached to EACC Mombasa, was on Friday, September 13 arrested for allegedly stealing Ksh416,000 from the commission's offices in Mombasa.

The Daily Nation reported that the amount of money was part of exhibits in a case that the officer was handling.

Speaking exclusively to Kenyans.co.ke, EACC spokesperson Yassin Amaro confirmed the arrest of the police officer, stating that she had been in charge of an ongoing case.

He alleged that the agency discovered the anomaly when the officer was handing over the files to the incoming officer as she was returning to camp after the end of her shift.

The EACC officers then pounced on her and put her in custody.

He further clarified that the officer was not an employee of the EACC, but an only attached to them from the administration police.

Yassin sought to steer the blame from the commission by asserting that EACC is built on firm principles and would not condone any corrupt officer under its jurisdiction.

"If we consume the exhibit, then what are we going to take to court, and this is a law enforcer," he wondered.

He also expressed regret that the EACC does not have any control over the kind of officers that are attached to them.

Yassin added that the buck stops with the police department which attaches police officers in hour of the commissions request.
