The management at Thika based African Spirits Limited - the alcoholic drinks factory linked to city tycoon Humphrey Kariuki, are accusing police officers of large scale theft of assorted alcoholic drinks from their premises.
Speaking to the People Daily on Wednesday, September 18, one of the company directors who prefered anonymity made the startling allegations, adding that they were shocked at the high rate at which the officers were pilfering their establishment.
“Being a crime scene, it is quite difficult to quantify the value of the property that has so far been stolen. Since the police took over the premises, they are the ones who have been camping here and so if anything goes missing, they should be held responsible,” he alleged.
According to his statement, the law enforcers had been stealing not only alcoholic drinks but raw materials used in the manufacturing of liquor and vehicle parts as well.
The city tycoon's factory was closed down and declared to be a crime scene on January 2019, with a 24-hour police protection unit assigned to guard the premises.
It is this unrestricted freedom to access the vast plant that the unidentified director claims was misused to loot and steal.
He added that they had lost raw spirit used to manufacture alcohol, TV sets and gas cylinders so far.
However, Thika Sub-County Police Commander Beatrice Kiraguri, announce that she was unaware of any incidents of theft.
Her deputy, Bernard Ayoo echoed her sentiments, going on to question where the director had gotten his information from.
"I wonder how the company management has come to know that there are some things that have been stolen since no one is allowed access into the premises apart from the police,” he questioned.
