Sports CS Amina Mohamed on Monday, September 16, visited the Kenya Shooting team at the Kirigiti training camp as they prepare to represent Kenya at the International Defensive Pistol Association (IDPA) African Championship in Cape Town.
While flagging off the team, CS Amina took time to prove that she too was capable of handling a pistol.
Guided by the Senior Sgt Daniel Kyalo from the Kenya Prisons Training College, the cabinet secretary took aim at a target set for her and pulled the trigger.
As the bullet blasted off, Amina was clearly taken aback as she sighed in surprise.
She, however, broke into laughter possibly in relief as the team clapped impressed by her aim.
When it was time to analyze her shot, it was discovered that she hit the target on the chest which was an incredible feat for a novice shooter.
Amina was taken through a basic course in gun safety and handling before she got to fire the gun. She was also conferred with honorary membership at the NGAO-K shooting range.
Speaking during the ceremony, the CS stated that the government was keen on supporting all sports in the country including the less popular ones.
National Gun Owners Association of Kenya (NGOA) chairman Anthony Wahome called for more financial support from the government.
“We also request the government to facilitate the team that represents the country in the Africa championships, world whampionships, and the nationals in transport, accommodation and training modules that precede the championships.
"This will go a long way in promoting shooting sports in the country,” Wahome was quoted by The Standard.
