Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko on Tuesday, September 24, in audio on Facebook, exposed alleged improprieties by the engineers building the Dandora stadium.
In the audio, Sonko claimed that the engineers were trying to sabotage the project by adding an excess of Ksh100 million over the initial cost.
Sonko made the allegations while announcing the approval of eight stadia in Nairobi that would be up to Fifa standards on social media.
"Nairobi will soon have 8 new Modern FIFA standard stadiums. 4 already approved during the last financial year being Dandora ( Embakasi North), Kihumbuini (Westlands), Woodley (Kibra) and Ziwani ( Starehe). Next financial year we shall have Mukuru( Embakasi South), Riruta( Dagoreti South), Mihango or Jacaranda( Embakasi East) and Muhuri Muchiri ( Kasarani)," Sonko announced.
Sonko warned the engineers and county officials colluding to inflate the costs of dire consequences.
"Tueke mchezo Kando tupeleke Nairobi yetu mbele (Jokes aside, lets work to move this Nairobi forward) for instance Dandora Stadium was almost stalled coz of sabotage by some engineers and officers who wanted to hike the cost by Ksh100 Million on top," the governor added.
According to the audio, the meeting was attended by Woodley MCA and chairman of the sports committee in the county assembly Njehia Mwangi, Ziwani MCA Millicent Mugadi, county procurement director Leonard Biwott and the Dandora Stadium contractor.
The audio further revealed that the documents presented at the meeting indicated that the estimated value of construction had been altered from Ksh250 million to Ksh 350 million.
Sonko called for the altered document to be withdrawn until the contractor justified tht additional costs.
"We have to withdraw it. Unless we follow the law, he presents the variation explaining what he is adding for the money to be released," he added.
The governor also told the legislators in the meeting to be keen on the documents forwarded by the executive as he had noted they had a problem.
