Kenya Ferry Post Sparks Uproar Hours After Car Plunged into Indian Ocean

On Sunday, September 29, news of a vehicle that had slid off a ferry at the Likoni channel and plunged into the Indian ocean killing three people rekindled memories of two near-similar incidents in the preceding few months.

The disaster which was captured in a video showed a saloon car floating in the water before suddenly sinking into the deep waters.

On Monday, September 30, Kenya Ferry Services put out a social media post casually indicating that all was well with the troubled service provider.

The post, however, put Kenya Ferry in the line of fire as Kenyans faulted their disaster communications approach.

One user commented, "and I guess it's moving on... business as usual even after the loss of four lives? What measures have you put in since the accident yesterday to make sure other lives are not lost? Or is it that losing lives is part of your business?

"Even after yesterday's tragedy? No grieving for you? You're redefining arrogance and PR nightmare," another added.

"It's purely unacceptable and heartbreaking to see our fellow suffering taxpayers that pay for your salaries to keep your jobs at KFS plunge Into the deep ocean without help," a netizen stated.

After the accident, Kenya Ferry issued a statement through their official Facebook account.

"It's with sadness that we confirm an accident occurred on board MV.Harambee which was plying from mainland to the island side at 1815hrs, when a saloon car alleged with two occupants reversed and plunged into the sea midstream," Kenya Ferry stated.

The institution conveyed that investigations into the cause of the accident were ongoing.

"Search and rescue efforts are under way. Neither the car nor the occupants have been retrieved," the organization stated.
