Westlands MP Tim Wanyonyi reiterated his interest to run for Nairobi Governor even as the number of aspirants eyeing Governor Mike Sonko’s job come 2022 increases.
While sharing his story on how he ended up in a wheelchair, the two-time MP told Citizen TV’s Lilian Muli that he would be hanging his boots as a parliamentarian in exchange for votes to join the big boys club as governor.
In another interview at Mombasa Road-based radio station, Wanyonyi said, “Tayari nishajipanga. Nimeweka mguu mmoja ndani ya mto huu nikaona niko steady na naweza enda mbele,” (I have thought about it already. I’ve tested the water and I’m certain that I can take this bull by the horns).
Wanyonyi is in the same pool with Babu Owino and Johnson Sakaja who have publicly declared their interest to run City Hall.
Though he was was unreachable when Kenyans.co.ke contacted him for a comment, it is worth noting that the MP has been silent on the split between his party leader Raila Odinga and his brother FORD Kenya boss Moses Wetangula.
During the dramatic swearing-in of Raila as the 'people's president', Wanyonyi was instrumental in the planning and eventual execution of the fete that dealt the country spasms of vibrations fuelling secession talks.
Wetangula who was Raila’s co-principal in the 2017 general election distanced himself from Raila who in 2018 endorsed Wanyonyi as a fit leader capable of managing City Hall.
"I want to say our next Nairobi Governor is Tim. He is doing a good job, and deserves the ODM ticket in 2022,” Raila said.
Raila endorsed Wanyonyi in the presence of Embakasi East MP Babu Owino in a political gathering attended by Owino who holds gubernatorial ambitions.
Wanyonyi has been the MP of Westlands from 2013 after taking over from Fred Gumo who has since retired from active politics.
