Panic as Govt Recalls Unsafe Condoms

A total recall of condoms that were deemed unsafe by their Thailand-based manufacturer has sparked panic across the country.

The Kenya Medical Supplies Authority (Kemsa) shared a  letter -published by the Daily Nation on October 3, 2019, declaring the Sure brand of lubricated condoms as unsafe

Manufacturers of the Sure brand of condoms based in Thailand - Lifeline Laboratories, stated that the recall was done after concerns were raised over the effectiveness of the products.

"Lifeline Laboratories is recalling the product due to quality issues,” Kemsa's assurance manager John Aduda stated.

The letter went on to list the affected batch of condoms, categorized by their unique serial numbers.

"Affected condoms have batch numbers 17DN754 and 17DN052 and are set to expire between December 2021 and December 2022," an excerpt of the statement revealed.

A leakage test usually done on condoms both during the manufacturing process and by independent laboratories was inconclusive.

A spokesperson of Lifeline Laboratories went on to urge users to carefully check the brand name and date on the packaging material and foil wrapping and dispose of any that fell on the faulty category.

The Kenya Pharmacy and Poisons Board on November 30, 2018, also recalled two brands of male condoms after the products fell short in the quality assessment.

The defective products were manufactured by Cupid Limited and are branded Fiesta Stamina and Fiesta Big Black.

Faulty condoms expose one to the risk of sexually transmitted diseases as well as exposing couples to unplanned pregnancies, a report by the World Health Organization disclosed.
