Jubilee's Female MPs to Skip Uhuru's Event Over Likoni Tragedy

A section of Jubilee Party's female leaders attached to the Inua Mama faction have threatened to skip President Uhuru Kenyatta's event because of Likoni tragedy.

According to K24 TV, the lawmakers, led by Malindi MP Aisha Jumwa, Nakuru Woman Representative Susan Kihika and Kandara MP Alice Wahome, vowed to skip Mashujaa Day celebrations (slated for October 20, 2019) claiming that the state was not so effective in its retrieval plan and that it was an overall shame.

They further added that they will camp at the Likoni Channel unless the state recovers the bodies before the event starts.

They were speaking at Kandara and Maragua constituencies on Friday, October 4.

“If the bodies will not have been retrieved, I will lead women from all corners of the nation at Likoni Ferry during Mashujaa Day to mourn the death of mother [Kighenda] and her daughter,” argued Jumwa.

She further urged Uhuru to sack all officials related to the Likoni Ferry explaining that it was already clear they were not doing their jobs correctly.

“Mr. President, fly to Mombasa and sack those in charge of Coast Guard and Kenya Ferry Services for their ineffectiveness,” she continued.

“It’s shameful that we have not done anything to address systems to retrieve bodies.  My two crew have not been traced up to date,” added Kihika.

Mariam Kigenda Taita, 35, and her daughter, aged four years, passed away after their car slid off MV Harambee Ferry in Likoni.

The car they were in veered off the ferry on Sunday, September 29, and plunged into the ocean and has never been found ever since.
