MPs Fly to UK for Advice On Betting Industry

On Thursday, October 17, the National Assembly Committee on Sports, Culture and Tourism, led by Machakos Town MP Victor Munyaka and Lurambi MP Titus Khamala flew to the UK to benchmark on betting regulations.

The MPs were received by Kenya's Ambassador to UK Manoah Esipisu.

Kenya's betting bill came under review after a number of companies locked horns with the Betting Control and Licensing Board and the Kenya Revenue Authority.

The row between the government and betting firms saw Sportpesa and Betin close operations in Kenya.

The companies cited high taxes and stiff regulations as the reason for winding up.

"Sportpesa is disappointed with the decision by the Kenyan legislature to impose a 20 percent excise tax on all betting stakes.

The tax is based on a fundamental misunderstanding by the Rotich-led treasury of how revenue generation works in the bookmaker industry," read a statement on Twitter.

"Until such time that adequate taxation and non-hostile regulatory environment is returned, the SportPesa brand will halt operations in Kenya," the betting firm added.

The closure rendered hundreds of Kenyans jobless and the sports industry in limbo.

The battle to crack down on betting has elicited mixed reactions with some condemning it as a vice while others have claimed it as a source of livelihood.
