Panic as Gadget Explodes Onboard Likoni Ferry

There was panic on Tuesday, October 29, at 9.00am after a passenger's mobile phone burst into flames onboard MV Harambee in Likoni.

It is said that the incident took place when the passenger tried to open the cover of his mobile phone.

Kenya Ferry, through its social media pages, disclosed that the man threw the mobile phone in the water after passengers raised an alarm about the incident.

"The ferry staff and the police onboard responded as the ferry came back to the mainland ramp," part of the authority's statement read.

Further, the service provider confirmed that no one had been injured apart from the victim who had sustained minor bruises on the left wrist.

KFS also assured that the police officers attached to the vessel would handle the matter.

Two weeks ago, on October 15, 2019, passengers were in panic after MV Likoni Ferry stalled mid-journey across the Likoni Channel.

Likoni Sub-county Police Commander Benjamin Rotich confirmed that the incident was reported to the region's police station.

"I can confirm that the incident was reported but I am ineligible to answer any working or mechanical problems of the Kenya Ferry Services," he told Kenyans.co.ke

After reaching the shore, passengers are said to have stampeded while alighting from the vessel.

Witnesses revealed that the ferry stalled and drifted under the heavy ocean currents until another ferry, MV Jambo, moved in and pulled it to the shore.
