During any election, whether major or a mini-poll, a lot of preparation goes into ensuring citizens exercise their fundamental constitutional right without any major hiccups.
At the core of this process is the news media and its foundational role in ensuring listeners, readers and viewers get the full coverage of the intricacies of the voting day in nearly real-time.
In fact, if you are keen enough, you will notice that most broadcasters take their most experienced journalists for the exercise.
However, in an unprecedented twist, TV 47, a recently-launched broadcaster a grade 6 primary school pupil to cover the Kibra by-elections on Thursday, November 7.
While reporting live in her red uniform and flawless Kiswahili, Sylvia Adhiambo interviewed Kibra residents at length on their expectations from the mini poll.
The young Atieno speaks confidently into the camera as she makes a recap of what led to the by-election.
"Hujambo mtazamaji na natumai usalama salmini, nakukaribisha hapa TV47 katika kituo cha DC. Ningetaka kukumbusha kuwa kiti hiki kiliwachwa wazi wakati marehemu mbunge Ken Okoth aliaga dunia kwa ugonjwa wa saratani.
(Good morning and welcome to TV47. We are coming to you live from DC and I would like to remind you that the Kibra seat became vacant after the former MP Ken Okoth died of cancer)," she begins.
Speaking to Kenyans.co.ke, Eugene Anangwe, the CEO at TV47 stated that Ms Atieno was just one of the 11 students that the station is mentoring to become top brands in media.
"I was introduced to the kids by Job Bitange a cameraman working with a local TV station and I couldn't resist the urge to want to contribute to the achievement of their aspirations to become household names in media. We gave them a platform on TV47 to do what they love best; telling the stories of their hood, Kibra," the CEO stated.
