Treasury CS Ukur Yattani has restored the full budget that had been allocated to the Judiciary after a passionate rant by Chief Justice David Maraga.
In a letter to the chief executive officer of the Law Society of Kenya, Mercy Wambua, the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) Chief Registrar, Ann Amadi, confirmed that the money had been released.
"We wish to confirm that the treasury has restored the Judiciary's recurrent and development budget for the year 2019/2020," the letter read in part.
LSK had moved to court over austerity measures that CS Yatani announced as part of efforts to cut the government's recurrent expenditure by 50%.
In a suit filed at the High Court in Nairobi on Friday, November 1, through Aluso Ingati Advocates & Associates, it termed the CS’s action as an outright violation of the Constitution.
On Monday, November 4, Chief Justice David Maraga came out to lament about the frustrations his office and the entire Judiciary had been suffering at the hands of the Executive led by President Uhuru Kenyatta.
A visibly angry Maraga, in a televised address to the nation from the foot of the Supreme Court in Nairobi, revealed an alleged secret plot by the Executive to oust him from office before December 31.
Government spokesperson Cyrus Oguna stated that the judiciary was overreacting as they were not the only ones affected by the budget cuts as all departments of government had to deal with a 50 per cent cut.
He revealed that the surplus amount was being used to fund president Kenyatta's big four agenda.
