A bitter exchange between a motorist and Nairobi City askaris went viral after the motorist recorded the confrontation and shared it on social media.
In the video, the motorist and the askari were seen engaged in a heated argument after county officials got into her vehicle. They demanded her to drive to an impound yard and accused her of flouting traffic rules.
"You have no right to enter my car and force me to go anywhere. According to the law, you are supposed to tell me where you want me to go, and I will drive and meet you there!" the motorist protested.
The county askari, while seated in the vehicle, got on her phone and called a towing company to drag the car to the impound yard, but the motorist drove off despite protests and threats from the fire-breathing askari.
The argument then got physical as the county askari tried to force the motorist to drive towards the impound yard.
"Who do you think you are? Do you think that you are above the law?" the county security officer yelled in exasperation when she discovered that the motorist was not going to cede ground.
The driver answered back that she was aware of her rights and would not be intimidated by the county askaris.
Her case elicited reactions from many quarters, with Kenyans stating that they could relate with what had happened to her, and others congratulating her.
"Congrats madam for your courage and putting it clear to her that she got no right to enter your car. This has made my day. Keep us updated on how it has ended," Kamani Willie wrote.
"Drive them to EACC offices and lock them inside till you give all the video evidence to the detectives. Make sure all the doors are locked and ensure the A/C is warm enough for them to feel nice," Victor Munyao seconded.
