Esther Passaris Forces Health Ministry Boss to Take Action

Nairobi Woman Representative Esther Passaris, on Wednesday, November 13 ruffled feathers at the Ministry of Health.

According to Muhinza, her personal assistant who spoke to Kenyans.co.ke, the legislator spoke to the Health Director-General John Masasabi Wekesa over a Ksh 4 million hospital bill that had seen Stella Wamuyu stay in the morgue for two years.

"She intervened by calling the ministry and the founder of Nairobi Women's Hospital over Stella's issue and they agreed to waiver the accumulated hospital bill," he stated.

Passaris had shared a video on Facebook, in which she met Wamuyu's daughter Francisca Wanjiru during the release of Stella's body that had been detained at the hospital morgue.

"At Nairobi Women's Hospital for the release of Stella Wamuyu's body following an intervention. Thank you, Thenya Sam (Nairobi Women's Hospital CEO), for hearing the cry of this family," she posted.

Passaris also urged Francisca to apply for an NHIF cover and offering Ksh10,000 to start he off.

"Ensure you get NHIF, do you promise to do so? I'm giving you Ksh10,000 so that you get insurance for your family," Passaris instructed.

She also joined Fransisca and her family for a short service before Stella's body was ferried away.

Past reports by The Standard had indicated that Stella died on November 17, 2017, after she suffered meningitis.

The bill had however escalated after she contracted tuberculosis. Stella's condition forced her to alternate between the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and the general ward.

By August 2019, the family had accumulated an additional mortuary bill of Ksh307,800.

Efforts to plead with the hospital to release the body were futile until Passari's intervention.
