Sonko's Damning Exposé After Matiang'i's Meeting With Babu Owino

Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko, on Wednesday, November 13, made an exposé shortly after Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i and Embakasi East MP Babu Owino held a meeting.

In the meeting, the two leaders, Owino and Matiang'i, discussed the poor state of roads in Nairobi county with attention paid on a specific road, the faulty Fedha - Nyayo Gate B Road.

Taking to social media, Sonko felt responsible for the poor state of the road but absolved the county of any blame since it had paid Ksh800 million to Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) for the rehabilitation of roads.

"I want to take this early opportunity to take responsibility and apologize for the deplorable condition of the Fedha Road to Nyayo Estate Gate B. There is no excuse why that road should be in that condition.

"As a county government, we made a commitment to pay Ksh900 million to KURA as our part of the contribution towards the rehabilitation of diverse roads including Fedha Road under the programme by the authority in the last financial year 2018/19. As of 12th July 2019, we had paid Ksh800 Million to KURA," explained Sonko.

He went on to add that the county had opened an inquiry into the fund's usage before releasing the remaining Ksh100 million to the authority.

"In July, I ordered a process of monitoring and evaluation to determine the value for money (still ongoing) before releasing the final instalment of Ksh100 million.

"This Financial year 2019/20, as a county government we have committed to pay out to KURA another Ksh1.5 billion for further rehabilitation of city roads and we are processing the monies," he continued.

The meeting between Matiang'i and the lawmaker, which KURA Director General Engineer Silas Kinoti also attended, resolved to settle the poor roads issue once and for all.

"Today I paid a courtesy call to the Chief Minister Fred Matiang’i and KURA Director General Engineer Silas Kinoti and agreed that the construction of Fedha to Nyayo Gate B Road will commence soon," posted Owino after the meeting.
