The Kenya Meteorology Department has issued a flood alert across the country.
In a statement sent to newsrooms on Tuesday, December 3, the department advised Kenyans to brace for rains of up to 100 mm that could last until December 9.
Siaya, Kisumu, Homabay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Zoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo Marakwet, Nandi, Laikipia, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma and Busia should expect a significant amount of rainfall.
"The rainfall is likely to be higher than the long-term average amount received during the same month in other years," the statement read.
The met department also informed that the holiday period was likely to be wet with occasional heavy storms expected in the afternoons and during the night.
The heavy rain is likely to lead to flooding and disruption of transport systems in low-lying and poorly-drained areas.
The notice painted the same bleakness in the regions of West Pokot, Turkana, and Samburu, where flash floods were prone to occur.
Nairobi, Nyandarua, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang'a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, and Tharaka Nithi will also not be spared from the heavy pounding.
Rainfall was also predicted in the areas of Mombasa, Makueni, Kajiado, Kitui, Machakos, Taita Taveta, Tana River, Kilifi, Lamu and Kwale.
"Morning rains and afternoon/night showers are expected in several places during the month of December. The expected total amounts are likely to be above the long-term average for December," the weatherman informed.
