Ex-NMG Senior Boss Dies in South Africa

A former Nation Media Group board member passed away on Saturday, December 7, while receiving treatment in a hospital in South Africa.

The tycoon, Ali Mufuruki, served as a board member at the Nation Media Group and was the chairman of NMG subsidiary, Mwananchi Communications.

According to a report by The East African, Mufuruki fell ill while in Dar es Salaam and was rushed to The Aga Khan Hospital.

He was later transferred to South African Hospital, Morningside Hospital, on the afternoon of Saturday.

“Dear board members: This is news I would never have wanted to break to you but our dear friend Ali Mufuruki passed on last night at Morningside Hospital, Johannesburg in South Africa…” confirmed CEO rt chairman Sanjay Rughani confirmed.

Mufuruki, up until his death, served as chairman for Infotech Investment Group.

Infotech Investment Group has interests in IT and telecoms services, retail and real estate in the East Africa region. 

He also served as the chairman of the board of the Wananchi Group Holdings Kenya, chairman of the CEOs’ Roundtable of Tanzania, trustee of the Mandela Institute of Development Studies (MINDS) and chairman of the board of Chai Bora Ltd among others.

He is a Henry Crown Fellow of The Aspen Institute Class of 2001, and is founder and chairman of The Africa Leadership Initiative (ALI) East Africa. 

Mufuruki is a holder of a BSc in Mechanical Engineering Design from Reutlingen University, Germany.

He is survived by his wife Saada and four Children.
