Why Sonko Was Transferred to Industrial Area Prison

Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko was doomed to two more days in prison after he was denied bail at the Milimani Law Courts in Nairobi on Monday, December 9.

Sonko, who is set to appear in court on Wednesday, December 11, was then transferred from Ethics and Anti-corruption Commission (EACC) cells to Industrial Area Remand Prison.

According to a report published by Citizen TV, the prosecution team lead by State Counsel, James Kihara, submitted that EACC cells did not have the capacity to accommodate all the accused persons.

Kihara's team further requested the court to deny Sonko bail, stating that he would interfere with investigations or intimidate witnesses.

Cecil Miller, Sonko's lawyer, argued that Sonko should have been granted bail claiming he had been assaulted during the arrest and was experiencing chest pains.

According to Miller, a doctor who examined Sonko at EACC cells recommended a scan.

Chief Magistrate Douglas Ogoti directed the prison's medical center to approve Sonko's admission to hospital.

“Due to the urgency of the medical treatment of accused one (Mike Sonko), though disputed, it’s ordered that his admission to hospital will be certified by the prison's medical centre in the presence of his physician in order to be escorted to any other hospital for his medical attention as soon as that can be arranged,” Ogoti proclaimed.

A statement sent from Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko's communication team on December 7, claimed that the county chief was tortured by police officers and urgently needed medication.

Sonko’s lawyer Harrison Kinyanjui called for the arrest of a police officer who was captured on camera manhandling the city governor.
