Jubilee MP Proposes Retirement Age for Politicians

Nominated Jubilee MP David Sankok on December 11, proposed a retirement age of 65 for all working Kenyans, including politicians.

In a video posted by NTV, the nominated MP explained that setting an age limit for Kenyan politicians would be a step in the right direction, and would ensure more youths get into leadership positions.

The MP further urged that it would be prudent if the recommendations were taken into consideration even in the recently released BBI report.

“We must create job positions for our young people. We have a large number of youth who don’t have job positions in this country.

“We need to change the law and tie the retirement age of civil servants and all politicians at not more than 65 years,” suggested Sankok.

He further explained that the age limit ought to affect all elected positions in the country in order to create an efficient leadership system.

“The recommendation ought to affect all leaders including governors, senators, women representatives, MCAs, MPs and even the president.

“I just wish the BBI report included the age limit as one of its recommendations. If possible it needs to be included in the report as soon as possible,” further remarked Sankok.

According to the World Bank, Kenya’s unemployment rate stood at 9.3 per cent in 2019.

Despite efforts to address the loss of jobs among the youth, including political manifestos, the formation of the National Employment Authority in 2016, not much can b written home about.
