Mombasa Governor Ali Hassan Joho got Kenyans talking as he stepped out on Friday, January 17 in a Versace sweater.
Kenyans.co.ke established through a number of online listings that the retail price of the wool sweater averaged at Ksh137,500 ($1,375) sparking heated reactions from a section of netizens.
Known for his sense of style, Joho matched the multi-colored jumper with blue jeans and white sneakers.
While a section of Kenyans admired Joho's outfit, others accused the Governor of focusing too much on his image instead of his mandate.
"African leaders for you.... What do you expect?" posed Zack Kinyua.
"So what does it do when you wear.. massage you?" asked Ken Waithaka.
"I don't see any problem, nimevalia t-shirt ya 20bob na sisi wote tumefunika uchi [It's all good. I am wearing a Ksh20 bob t-shirt and we both are clothed]" wrote Phil Musyoka.
"Dear God, when you will bless me with money? I won't leave my mutumba [second-hand] outfits for this big-priced clothes. Because of the change, I will take it for charity," stated Losha Moiyah.
"So what, it's his money, you want Kenyans to complain? Work hard too," argued Mikeziggy Joe.
It is not the first time the Governor's expensive wardrobe has raised eyebrows.
On January 6, 2020, he was pictured in a Versace shirt worth an estimated Ksh46,000 ($460).
In August 2019, Joho was spotted partying with American socialite Paris Hilton while wearing a Versace shirt worth Ksh60,000.
Images on his social media pages have previously shown Joho wearing a Versace Gold Barocco print silk sweater pegged at Ksh89,000 and, on another occasion, a Cotton Hawaiian shirt with Tropical King Print valued at Ksh92,000.
In October 2019, he left many Kenyans in awe as he wore a Richard Mille Felipe Massa Flyback Chronograph watch valued at Ksh23 million.
Only Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has come close to keeping up with Joho's attire, unleashing a few expensive outfits of his own.
In early September 2019, he wore a shirt worth Ksh144,000 on his way to the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) offices where he was to be grilled over suspicious county government payments.
Sonko has also been spotted in a Gucci GG Supreme Bucket hat worth Ksh 67,500 as well as a Globe-Trotter Riviera 20 trolley worth Ksh 200,000.
