The government's move to gazette embattled Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu minutes after his impeachment has raised eyebrows amongst Kenyans.
In an outpouring of concerns on social media immediately the gazette notice emerged, many questioned the efficiency at which the government printer had cemented Waititu's fate in print.
The gazette notice, dated January 29, 2020, officially announced that Waititu had been impeached by the Senate on grounds of gross violation of the constitution, the County Government Act, the Public Finance Management Act, 2012, and the Public Procurement and Disposal Act.
The speed at which the gazette notice was produced attracted concerns from politicians and ordinary Kenyans alike, some of whom saw the impeachment as a plot orchestrated by the government from the start
"This is a record-breaking Gazette Notice. Unbelievably efficient. We voted at 9.00 pm to impeach him by 9:10 pm already gazetted [sic]. Clearly it was predetermined," nominated Senator Millicent Omanga speculated.
Her sentiments were echoed by the Senate Majority leader Kipchumba Murkomen, who sarcastically lauded the efficiency and speed at which the government had responded to the impeachment.
"The efficiency of the Government Printer should be emulated by all," he wrote.
A section of journalists and citizens also gave their two-cents on the gazettement of the impeachment.
"And the Gazette notice is out barely hours after the Senate verdict on Ferdinand Waititu tenure as Kiambu Governor," Citizen TV's Francis Gachuri weighed in.
"Impeachment of Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu Gazetted moments after his removal by the Senate," former Citizen TV anchor and presenter Hussein Mohamed announced.
"The speed at which Governor Waititu's impeachment was gazetted must be sending a chill to corrupt governors and a confirmation that he was either hated or that No One Can Stop Reggae," Mwalimu Jacob Akech stated in reference to ODM leader Raila Odinga's sentiments on the force of the Building Bridges Initiative.
"The government can be that effective. The motion passed at night and gazetted at the same time, can we have such energy in fighting corruption, ...or it's not a political war [sic]," Daudi Waitiri shared his opinion.
The Judiciary announced that Judge John Onyiego will on Thursday, January 30, preside over swearing-in of Deputy James Nyoro as new Kiambu Governor after Waititu impeachment.
