Fresh Plans to Impeach Governor Sonko Revealed [VIDEO]

Plans to impeach Nairobi Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko could be revived by the County Assembly of Nairobi minority whip Peter Imwatok who on Monday, February 3, claimed that the motion would be given first priority when the assembly reconvenes.

According to Imwatok, the motion was ready and had already received the required signatures from MCAs.

“We know clearly that Maina Kamanda spoke loud and clear… It is very clear to all Kenyans that Nairobi has a problem which ought to be sorted out in the Kiambu style. And there is no shortcut,” warned Imwatok.

He claimed that 82 MCAs had already backed the motion to impeach the embattled governor despite a backdrop of late December where ODM MCAs distanced themselves from a hushed plan to oust the governor arguing that they would only do so if instructed by the party.

The minority whip’s claims emerge as a follow up to Nominated MP Maina Kamanda calling on Nairobi MCAs to impeach Sonko, who is currently facing corruption charges.

Kamanda praised the near-unanimous decision of Kiambu MCAs to kick out Waititu during the swearing-in of new Kiambu Governor James Nyoro.

Nairobi majority leader Charles Thuo meanwhile rubbished the motion against Sonko, saying it did not have the support of Jubilee MCAs who form the majority in the assembly.

The Nairobi governor remains out of office after the High Court denied him access to his office following his arraignment on graft-related charges.

Sonko faces 19 corruption charges that include money laundering, conflict of interest, abuse of office, acquisition of public funds and conspiracy to commit an economic crime.

Nairobi MCAs, who went on break on December 11, 2019, are expected to resume normal sittings on Tuesday, February 11
