Four Killed in Tragic Treasure Hunt

Four miners were on the evening of Wednesday, February 6, killed after a tunnel they were working in collapsed in Nyatike, Migori County.

Authorities who spoke to The Standard attributed the collapse that caused the deaths of  Ezra Juma, Charles Owino, Oyudi and Asiko to weak walls.

The injured were rushed to Migori County Referral Hospital where they underwent treatment and were discharged.

David Oula, the Mikai Area Chief, stated that the autopsies will be done at the Migori County Referral Hospital on then deceased to establish the exact cause of death.

Gold mining is the gift that keeps on giving and taking in Migori with death from the mines going back to 2017.

A report authored by the Daily Nation on Thursday 16, 2017, highlighted the death of two miners who had died in Masara following the collapse of a mine they were working in.

The accident occurred during a season of heavy rains mirroring the circumstances of the Wednesday accident.

Migori County Police Commander, Joseph Nthenge, attributed the weakened walls of the mines to the rains.

"Most of the walls of the mines have been weakened by the rains and become dangerous."

Another report, released by the Daily Nation, on Sunday 6, October 2019, unearthed factors that had contributed to the slew of mining deaths in Migori.

The publication attributed the lack of sufficient safety policies in the mines to the tycoons who own them including, Migori Governor Okoth Obado and other top officials in the Migori County Government.

Controls governing the mines are lax or covertly flouted, the report further revealed.
